Aluminum Wiring Replacement

Many homes built in the mid-1960's and early 1970's were wired with aluminum wiring instead of copper. Unfortunately, aluminum wiring has been found to pose a fire hazard.

Wherever aluminum is spliced or makes a connection with an outlet, switch, circuit breaker the aluminum wires a potential fire hazard exists. At these connection points, the aluminum expands or shrinks with temperature changes. Over time, this continual expansion and contraction can cause breaks in the circuit and cause overheating, sparks or fire. In the Dallas area, we experience severe seasonal temperature changes with 40 degrees one days and 80 the next!

Some electricians may insist that your entire home should be rewired. Fortunately, this isn't always the case.  The safety issue can be resolved simply by adding copper connection points to the ends of the aluminum wires where they connect to switches, outlet and circuit breakers.

Aluminum retrofits should only be performed by qualified technicians. AMPs technicians are trained in upgrading the wiring in older homes and have been contracted by the City of Dallas to assist in retrofitting numerous homes in Dallas.
